Summer Camps at Hands On!

Where else can you custom tie dye a t-shirt, blast off Mentos geysers, create your own custom-fitted and hula hoop, send suds flying into the air, make ooey gooey silly putty, paint a masterpiece, build an air rocket, and much, much more?!?! Children ages 5 to 12 can explore and discover the sciences, arts, and more in our week long summer camps that are sure to make fun, silly, and educational memories sure to last a lifetime. Download your registration packet.

Choose the week of camp that is right for your camper:

  • Monday, June 5th-Friday, June 9th
  • Monday, June 19th-Friday, June 23rd
  • Monday, July 17th – Friday, July 21st

Choose the type of day that is right for your camper:

  • HALF day (Drop off 9:30-9:45, pickup 12:15-12:30)
    • Cost: $ 100 for members, $150 for non-members
    • Includes a Hands On! t-shirt for tie dyeing, all activity and experiment supplies, play time in the museum, drinks provided at mid-morning snack time. Half day campers need to bring a NUT FREE snack and extra clothes and shoes daily.
  • FULL day (Drop off 9:30-9:45, pickup 4:15-4:30)
    • Cost: $ 150 for members, $200 for non-members
    • In addition to what half day camps include, full day camps include additional activities and experiments, extended play time in the museum, drinks provided at snack and lunch times. Full day campers need to bring 2 NUT FREE snacks, a NUT FREE lunch, and extra clothes and shoes daily.

Monday, August 28th, 9:30am-noon – Jr. Inventor Workshop

Celebrate National Inventors Month with a workshop that will help you hone in your craftsmanship, skill, and ingenuity.  Assemble a miniature hovercraft, build your own table-sized, self-supporting bridge and create your own 2-liter bottle, rocket launcher.  Then put your new skills to the test with a free-building activity, and invent a one-of-a-kind contraption in our feature exhibit, Make It. Take It.  A healthy snack will be included as well.  Cost $12 for members, $15 for non-members. Ages 7-12.  Payment is required with registration by Wednesday, August 16th.  To register, email reservations@handsonmuseum.org.  To ensure a fun, effective, and consistent workshop experience, parents/guardians may not present in the workshop.

Monday, September 18th, 4:00-6:00pm – Sensory Night

The event is designed for children with sensory integration needs and their immediate family. Lighting and sound are adjusted as well as many other environmental elements.  The Museum will be closed to the public during this event and registration is required. Sensory Nights are free. Saturday, September 23rd, 9:00am – 10:30am – Girl Scout Woodworker Badge Activity

Calling all Girl Scouts!  Join us for a fun, hands-on, guided woodworking experience in our feature Exhibit, Make It. Take It.  Complete all of the requirements for the Cadette Woodworker badge, although all Girl Scouts are welcome to come master their woodworking skills.  Swing a hammer, keep it level, use a screwdriver, saw some wood, and finally build something yourself with a variety of materials on-hand.  Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 13th to receive the discounted rate of $7 per scout for ages 5+, otherwise the cost is $10 at the door.  To make your reservation, please email reservations@handsonmuseum.org.  (*Admission to the main museum exhibition area is not included.  The museum will be open at an additional cost at the regular per person rate.)

Monday, September 25th, 10:00am-2:00pm – Home School Family Day

Join us for this special day just for our loyal home school visitors.  Come together to network, explore, play, experience STEAM concepts, and get the latest scoop on workshop, outreach, and field trip opportunities! Eastman Discovery Lab and Art Studio programs will be announced throughout the event.  In addition, our feature exhibit, Make It. Take It. will also be open for this event.

Pre-registration is required to receive the discounted Home School Days rate of $6 per person for ages 3+, otherwise tickets are $9 at the door.  To make your reservation, please email reservations@handsonmuseum.org by Friday, September 22nd.

Additional activities include:

  • Tesla Experience Show additional $2 per person ages 3+ (tickets available at the door)

Gray Fossil Site & Museum Paleo Camps

Only at the Gray Fossil Site and Museum can you dig for fossils, wet-screen micro-fossils, get a behind the scenes tour of the fossil site, make casts of bones, and examine rocks and minerals. Additional activities include dissecting an owl pellet, science experiments, science-based art projects, t-shirt tie-dying, and so much more! Children ages 5 to 12 can explore and discover the sciences, arts, and more in our week-long summer camps that are sure to make memories to last a lifetime. Fossil & Artifact ID Nights at Gray Fossil Site & Museum

On Tuesdays 4:00pm-6:00pm: June 27th, July 25th, September 26th, and November 28th
You don’t have to be a paleontologist to find fossils. Identifying them is a different story.  Bring any kind of rock, fossil, artifact, or mineral to Fossil & Artifact ID Night, and scientists at the museum will provide space for the study of these finds. There will be an archarologist, paleontologist, and geologist on site. The event is free and open to the public but does not include admission to exhibits.

Wednesday, July 19th, 9:30am – 11:30am – Shark Dissection

Take a bite out of summer boredom in honor of Shark Week with a one of a kind experience – dissecting a dogfish shark!  Work with a partner as you dissect and discover the inner workings of one of the ocean’s mysterious creatures.  Cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members.  Ages 8-15.  Payment is required with registration by Wednesday, July 12th.  To register, please email reservations@handsonmuseum.org.  To ensure a fun, effective, and consistent workshop experience, parents/guardians may not present in the workshop.

Saturday, August 12th, 9:30am – noon – Jr. Geologist Workshop

You asked, and we listened-one of our most popular workshops is now available to you on the weekend!  Find out why geology “rocks” in this workshop all about the wonders of the science of geology.  Formulate your own ooey gooey quicksand and make a sinkhole in a cup.  Explore the differences between rocks and minerals, then try out a rock and mineral hardness test while learning about Mohs Hardness Scale!  A healthy snack is included.  Cost $12 for members, $15 for non-members.  Ages 5-13. Friday, August 25th, 6:30pm – Movie Night

Cool down from the summer heat with a movie straight out of the Ice Age.  Watch your favorite eclectic herd  save the planet from a cosmic threat caused by yet another failed acorn pursuit.  (Rated PG) The Museum gift shop will be open and stocked with snacks, drinks, and other various merchandise available for purchase (Outside food and drink not permitted).  Cost:  Movie viewing is FREE in the ECU Classroom with limited seating available. Themed activities will be available at intermission for $2 per person ages 3+.  (Our Museum exhibition space will be closed.  Adult supervision required at all times.)  Doors open at 6:30, movie begins at 6:45, with an intermission at the movie’s midpoint.

Friday, September 29th, 6:30pm – Movie Night

Calling all Girl Scouts!  Join us for a fun, hands-on, guided experience that will make you “bug out”.  Complete all of the requirements for the Brownie Bugs Badge, although all Girl Scouts are welcome.  Draw a bug poster, try a bug craft, see bugs in action, explore bug homes, and take a bug “field trip”.   Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 20th to receive the discounted rate of $7 per scout for ages 5+, otherwise the cost is $10 at the door.  To make your reservation, please email reservations@handsonmuseum.org.  (*Admission to the main museum exhibition area is not included.  The museum will be open at an additional cost at the regular per person rate.)
